The play profiles Sha Qi, a contemporary Chinese artist of canvas and oil
painting, through his psychical struggle.
Sha Qi (1914-2005)
Born in Zhejiang province in 1914 and graduated from the art department of
National Central University. Sha began to learn painting from Xu Beihong
in 1937 and in the same year Xu introduced him to study at Belgium Royal Academy
of Fine Arts where he learned painting from A. Bastien. In 1939, he won
Excellent Fine Arts Medal for his good grades in sketching, oil painting and
sculpture courses. In 1940, he works were exhibited with works of famous
painters such as Picasso in Belgium. His work Girl Playing Flute was collected
by the Mother of the King of Belgium at that time. Sha returned to China in
1946. When an European art delegation visited China in 1949, Sha was praised by
members of the delegation while they mentioned him to Premier Zhou Enlai. Zhou
asked Xu Beihong about him. When Zhou knew that he was ill, Zhou asked the
government to give Sha a life allowance to support him. In 1983, Sha’s solo show
was held at Hangzhou and China Art Museum collected three of his works. He was
renown for canvas and oil painting, died in 2005, being passed for a great
master of Chinese oil painting history, like a world renown Van Gogh.

沙耆，著名画家，被称为“中国的凡·高”，“藜斋”是沙耆的故居。这位宁波籍的天才画家曾师从徐悲鸿，后赴比利时国立皇家美术学院留学并获金质奖章，曾与毕加索等名画家一同参加展览，他的杰作《吹笛女》被比利时皇后伊丽莎白收藏，后因精神分裂症回国。
本剧以音乐剧的形式展现了中国一代油画大师沙耆的心路历程。
