Yueju Opera Chasing the Fish (Mermaid) tells the romance between a fish spirit turned beauty and a Confucian student.
A young  scholar named Zhang Zhen and the daughter of Prime Minister Jin had been engaged to marry since their childhood. In order to attend the imperial examination, the young man had to ask the Jin family for shelter as his family went into decline. The Jin Family despised him for his poverty and asked him to stay at a cottage beside Bibo Pond for studying. Zhang studied so hard that affected a carp spirit which lived in the pond long time. The carp spirit often transformed itself in the mortal form of Miss Jin to give him material aid, as well as spiritual support. Upon the Jin family’s finding out about the material aid Zhang had received, they accused him of stealing. Both the real and chimerical Miss Jin appeared in court to testify, the former supporting and the latter disputing the accusation against Zhang. The judge was incapable of telling which was the mortal Jin daughter and asked Zhang to answer the question. Zhang insists "one that helps others is a human being; one that does harm to others is a monster."

The film is one of Chinese classic drama films, starring the famous Yue Opera actresses Xu Yulan and Wang Wenjuan.
