The story took place in Jin Kingdom during the Spring and Autumn Period. Over 300 family members of Zhao Dun, a loyal official in Jin Kingdom, were murdered by Tu Angu, a conspirator, except an orphan. Cheng Ying and others, underwent adventure, hardship, as well as painful loss of his own son in their struggle against the treacherous rival- Tu Angu. The righteousness finally overcame the evil.

The play is a successful adaptation of the original script with more concentrated conflicts, more exciting plots, and more distinctive characters. The family feud and the struggle between the loyal and the treacherous in the original script have evolved into a fight between good and evil, kindness and cruelty.

Cheng Ying and his companions' heroic deeds are highlighted. Li Shujian successfully plays the role of Cheng and displays Cheng’s perseverance, personality and sacrifice. His artistic singing also contributes to the success of the opera.
