Ma Yifu (1883-1967)

Born in Changtang, Shaoxing (now belonging to Shangyu), Zhejiang Province, China, Ma Yifu left for Chinese supervisory official of Chinese students in the United States in 1903, later went to study foreign languages in Germany and Spain. He went to study Japanese in Japan in 1904. Returning to China, Mr. Ma settled down in Hangzhou, and served as the professor of Zhejiang University and the director of Zhejiang Arts and History Academy. He wrote many treatises and known for the "master of Confucianism, Buddhism and philosophy". Mr. Ma is not merely a much-admired master of Confucianism (now called modern "Neo-Confucian"), also a translator, poet, and remarkable calligrapher. He was a versatile calligrapher who excelled at Zhuan, Li, Xing and Kai and did equally well in seal cutting. His existing book was My Seal Cutting.

This documentary represents Ma Yifu's life and his story. You have a chance to appreciate his remarkable calligraphic arts.

国学大师马一浮
马一浮(1883-1967)名浮，字湛翁，号蠲叟。浙江绍兴人。现代著名国学大师，清光绪9年生，1967年卒，年85岁。1901 年，曾与马君琥、谢无量在上海合办《二十世纪翻译世界》杂志，介绍西方文学，1903年6月，赴美国主办留学生监督公署中文文牍，后又赴德国和西班牙学习外语。1904年东渡至日本学习日文，回国后定居杭州。辛亥革命后，潜心研究学术，于古代哲学、文学、佛学，无不造诣精深，又精于书法，合章草、汉隶于一体，自成一家。书宗禇遂良，融合章草，参以汉隶，乃自成一家。篆隶行楷，求者苟能得其一则倍珍之。盖重其人品格之清高与夫学问之渊博。在蜀在浙，尝手创复性书院，雍容讲学，卓然古学者之风范。著有尔雅台答问，复性书院讲录。丰子恺尊弘一法师、夏丏尊、马一浮为其精神与学识之导师。

马一浮先生是我国现代思想文化史上一位重要的儒学思想家，西泠印社著名社员。他倾毕生精力于我国传统思想文化尤其是六艺理学经义的研究，精研儒学综汇儒学特别是宋明理学各派学说，并融会释道，广纳百家，兼容并包、圆融会通，学问博大精深。马先生不仅是一位德高望重的儒学大师。而且还是一位杰出的诗人和书法大家。他的诗词，玄言梵典，哲理深邃，意境高妙，文辞精美；他的书法，遍临碑贴，穷源溯流，众体皆备，无不精粹。
