The story is set in a metropolis of Southeast China in 1996, which is characterized by its heavy industry. Due to the fierce market competition, the senior model worker Yang and his family members are laid off just like many others in the city.
Mother, her elder daughter, younger son and younger daughter are waiting for Father to return from hospital. Father falls in faint as his elder son's announcement that he has resigned from his factory. Then Father begs the leaders of the factory to allow his son to return but the elder son refuses to go to work in a factory but chooses to do business. Unluckily, his first business ends in the loss of a large sum of money due to his brother-in-law's deception, which, then, leads to his elder sister’s angry divorce. She has to sells newspapers to make a poor living. The younger son, in spite of his father's opposition against his love with a peasant worker, goes to work in a construction site but unfortunately gets injured. Only his youngest daughter, after graduating from college, finds a job in state-owned enterprise in the
Development Zone. Father has to sell bunches of baked muttons on street.
Song Guofeng, president of the Liaoning People's Art Theater and also a two-time winner of the state's leading "Plum Blossom Award", plays the role of the father.
The drama Father by the Liaoning People's Art Theater was appraised by the Culture Ministry as one of the "Ten Elite Plays" on the national level in 2004. This drama gets lots of awards, as the Eleventh "Wenhua" Award awards by the Ministry of Culture of PRC and so on.
