This performance is to celebrate the 50th anniversary of China Peking Opera
Theatre.
Xiao En, a former hero of the greenwood, lived as a fisherman with his
young daughter Guiying. Both were good at martial arts.
In the county the magistrate had illegally
relegated the collection of the fishing tax to Squire Ding, a despotic landlord,
who tried to squeeze all he could out of the poor fishermen.
The whether of season was so bad and the climate was so dry that fishermen had
difficulty to live. However, a lackey of the Squire's still kept
going the rounds to press for money. One day he happened to come
across Xiao on the boat and run into the latter's two brave friends. These champions of the weak, furious on hearing about the
extortions, denounced the tax collector and gave him a warning
message: The squire must consider his action and pay the fiddler.
Ding, upset by this warning, dispatched a gang of roughnecks to
Xiao En's cottage for money. This
caused a fracas in front of the house. The hirelings, though superior in number,
were actually sham fighters, and they were beaten to flee from the cottage by
Xiao and his daughter in the end.
The story came from the novel
Water Margin.
Peking Opera Fishermen's Revenge (Da Yu Sha Jia) is so popular that the
character figures of white-bearded Xiao
En and attractive Guiying are often made into various handicrafts in China. The
fisherman and his daughter in a boat symbolize the indomitable struggle of the labor
class against feudal oppression.
