Chen Hongmou, a Second Grade Grand Secretary of the State and Secretary of Works of the Qing Dynasty, returns home on account of old age. On the way home, he goes by way of Shanxi where he owes bitterly to someone for years.
Unexpectedly, a murder exposes to him one of his post achievement projects which has won the emperor’s praise but done great harm to local peasants. He endures pangs of contrition and stands up to defy authority in a charter of conflicts concerning heaven, earth, army, relatives and masters.
Gui Opera
Gui Opera came into being in Ming and Qing Dynasties and became a popular art form in Guilin and north regions to Guilin. Tourists from Anhui Province introduced the Anhui Tune in Guilin, and the Anhui Tune developed into Gui Tune
later. Melting with palace opera of Jingjiang Palace and folk opera introduced by musicians from palace in Ming dynasty, Gui Opera performed in Guilin local dialect then formed with Gao, Kun, Chui, Tan, and Za tunes.

本剧讲述了年逾古稀的东阁大学士兼工部尚书陈宏谋告老还乡途中，转到陕西，想偿还一笔积压心底的苦情账，不想引出一场谋杀，牵出一桩公案，荡出一个冤魂，爆出一件因他而起，已经皇帝嘉定，却坑农、害农的假政绩“秦绢”工程，使他痛切反思，悍然犯颜，演绎出一场天、地、军、亲、师的剧烈大碰撞。
桂剧是广西主要的地方剧种。它有比较悠久的历史，约在明代中叶便开始发端。明末清初广西已有昆腔，后高腔和弋阳腔又相继传入，相互融合而形成以弹腔(即皮黄)为主的高、昆、吹、杂等五种声腔艺术的桂剧。
桂剧剧目相当丰富，有“大小本杂八百出”之说。由于它的产生和发展与徽剧、汉剧、湘剧、祁剧都有着密切的血缘关系，所以它的剧目多与皮黄系统的兄弟剧种相似。
桂剧声腔以“弹腔”为主，兼有“高腔”、“昆腔”、“吹腔”以及杂腔小调。其“弹腔”则分“南路”(二黄)、“北路”(西皮)两大类。它们的反调形式“阴皮”和“背弓”，又都自成体系。伴奏乐队亦与其他皮黄系统的剧种一样分为文场、武场。前者使用二弦(似京胡)、月琴、三弦、胡琴以及曲笛、梆笛、唢呐、唧呐(即海笛)等，兼配部分中、低音乐器；后者使用脆鼓(板鼓)、战鼓、大、小堂鼓、板(扎板)、大锣、大钹、小锣、小钹、云锣、星子、碰铃等等。
桂剧角色分为生、旦、净、丑四大行当。生行又分生、末、外、小、武；旦行中又分旦、占、贴、夫；净行则分为净、副、末净；丑得只分丑和小丑。
桂剧表演侧重做工，注重以细腻而富于生活气息的表演手法塑造人物。即使是武戏，也多是文做。
