9 selected famous arias of lao dan and xiao sheng in Peking Opera: Li Duokui,
Li Jinquan, Woyun Jushi, Song Jiemei, De Junru, Jiang Miaoxiang, Ye Shenglan.
Li Duokui (1898-1974), a native of Beijing. He first learned lao sheng and
later turned to lao dan. In his early years he was once under training of Lu
Yanting, accompanist for Gong Yunfu. Later he acknowledged Luo Fushan, a lao dan
actor of the Sixi Troupe as his master; meantime, he also got instruction from
Gong Yunfu. He inherited the strong points of the Gong style and developed them
according to his own conditions. His unique performing art was recognized as the
Li style. His voice was wide-ranged, crisp and bright; his singing was vigorous
and forceful with clear enunciation and smooth tunes. He was most celebrated for
his singing, which has been followed by many lao dan players after him. He was
an influential actor in the lao dan role of Beijing opera in his time. His
repertoire included the Tower for Watching Her Son, Mother Grieving for Her
Son's Death, a Golden Turtle Caught in Fishing, Beating the Royal Robe and Town
of Chi Sang.
Li Jinquan (1920-), a native of Beijing. At 12 he entered the Zhonghua
Traditional Opera Training School, specializing in lao dan. He was trained by
Wen Liangchen, Liu Junfeng and Shi Qingshan. After graduation he co-performed
with Li Shaochun, Yuan Shihai and Ye Shengzhang. In 1941 he offered himself as
Li Duokui's disciple. He joined China Beijing Opera Theatre after the founding
of new China. With a crisp and resonant voice, he sings in a sonorous and
vigorous way. On the basis of assimilating others' artistic merits, he arranges
his tunes creatively according to different roles he plays so that the emotions
of his characters can be expressed exactly by his performance. His repertoire
includes a Golden Turtle Caught in Fishing, Encounter with the Empress, Beating
the Royal Robe, Dowager Resigns from Court, Mother Tattoos Slogan on Her Son's
Back, Calling Off the Banquet, Li Kui Visits His Mother. His students, Wang
Mengyun, Wang Jinghua and Wang Xiaolin, have all been benefited from Li's
influence.
Ye Shenglan (1914-1978), born in Beijing. At the age of 12 he was transferred
from Fuqingshe to Fu Liancheng School, first learning wu dan and then xiao sheng.
He learned civilian operas from Zhang Cailin and Xiao Lianfang and then warrior
operas from Ru Rulan. After graduation he became a disciple of Cheng Jixian for
further training. Then he turned into a xiao sheng actor and was good at
performing both civilian and warrior roles, particularly at zhiwei sheng
(wearing a military hat with pheasant plumes on it). He had a sonorous voice. He
was well versed in singing, recitation, acting and acrobatics. He was a master
of the art of uniform motion and gesture. His masterpieces included the Meeting
of Heroes, Borrowing Zhao Yun, Eight Big Hammers, General Luo Cheng, General Lu
Bu and Beauty Diao Chan, White Gate Tower, etc. He was bold in making
innovations and made a great contribution to the development of the art on the
basis of inheriting the fine tradition of performing xiao sheng of his
predecessors. After the founding of new China, he rehearsed and performed
Butterfly Lovers, the Storm and Thunder of Jintian, the White Haired Girl, the
White Snake, etc.
