Dealing with the social changes that, among other things, have seen millions of Beijingers leave the close confines of their Hutongs for more spacious high-rise accommodations, the drama "Myriad Twinkling Lights of a City" presents the living surroundings and standards of the residents in the old downtown, the southern part of Beijing in the last decade.

The drama tells the story of three brothers and their 80-year-old mother who live in a run-down quadrangle, with problems including limited space, frequent blackouts, leaky and collapsing roofs, no private washrooms, and no central heating. They lived there for more than 10 years before an urban planning project was introduced by the government, which relocated residents.

The play stars popular comedienne Song Dandan and dramatic actor Pu Cunxi, and is helmed by avant-garde director Lin Zhaohuan. The drama is presented by the Beijing People's Art Theatre.
