7 selected famous arias of four early great players of old male role in Peking opera: Yu Shuyan, Yan Jupeng, Gao Qingkui, and Ma Lianliang.

Yu Shuyan (1890-1943), a native of Luotian, Hubei. A disciple of Tan Xinpei, he was learned and refined in art. His singing was characterized by a perfect combination of strength and gentleness. He was original in the arrangement of tunes and use of breath. He was also polished in dialoguing. At a new high in the art of singing, he greatly influenced other lao sheng actors, and the Yu style was admired and followed by many. His masterpieces were Battle of Taiping, Mount Dingjun, the Ningwu Pass, a Dagger Hidden in the Fish Belly, the Orphan of Zhao Family, Suicide at the Monument, Selling House, Hong Yang Cave, In and Out of the Box and a Helmet Tassel Torn Off at a Feast. He was followed by Meng Xiaodong, Wang Shaolou, Tan Fuying, Yang Baozhong, Wu Yanheng, Li Shaochun and Chen Shaolin.

Yan Jupeng (1890-1942), a native of Beijing. As an admirer of Tan Xinpei, he strove for, and succeeded in, professionalizing himself in Beijing opera. he knew musical temperament well. His singing was refined and delicate with a pleasing modulation in tone. His beautiful, vivid performing art was recognized as the Yan style. His masterpieces ere Offering Xuzhou City, Zhuge Liang Mourns for Zhou Yu, the Extended Encampment, Baby Exchanged at Execution Ground, Ascending to Heaven Terrace, Empress He Reviles at the Court, etc. His art was inherited by such accomplished actors as Yan Shaopeng, Zhang Shaolou, Yan Xingpen, Li Jiazai and Bi Yingqi.

Gao Qingkui (1890-1942), a native of Yuci, Shanxi. He started his profession at the age of 12. He assimilated the way of singing of Liu Hongsheng's. With a strong and clear voice, he was particularly good at expressing grief and indignation. His masterpieces were the Xiao Yao Ferry, Stabbing Emperor's Robe, Execution of General Ma Su, General's Son to Be Executed, Suicide at the Monument, Ruse of Cosmetics, the Iron Lotus and Presenting a Silk Robe. He appeared on the Japanese stage together with Mei Lanfang in 1919. He performed in many new plays such as Crying for Seven Days and Nights, Chong Er in Exile, Shi Kefa, Lord Xin Ling, Gou Jian the King of Yue and the Xunyang Tower. He was followed by Bai Jialin, Li Hezeng and Li Shengzao.

Ma Lianliang (1901-1966), a native of Beijing. As a trainee at the Fuliancheng in his early years, he learned to play wu sheng and lao sheng roles. Since he finished his training, during the period from 1920s to 1960s, he had been active on the stage all the time and established himself as an outstanding performing artist with his unique style, the Ma style. His voice was pleasingly gentle. His singing was fresh and had a lingering charm. His body movement was natural and graceful, which contributed much to his exquisite performance. He was particularly celebrated for his perfection in dialoguing, which the audiences felt would tug at their heartstrings. Ma was good at both civilian and martial roles. His early performances included Mount Dingjun and Nan Yang Pass, in which he played the martial roles, and General's Son to Be Executed, and Silang Visits His Mother, which featured his skill of singing. His performances at the middle age as in Ten Petitions, Burning the Mian Mountain, the Fire-Ox Battle Formation, Sweet Dew Temple, Four Newly Appointed Officials, a Human Head on Trial and Summoning the East Wind were all loved by the audience and many of the arias from these plays had been widely spread and sung by Beijing opera fans. The Orphan of Zhao Family was followed by Yan Shaopeng, Zhou Xiaotian, Wang Jinlu, Chi Jinsheng, Wang Helin, Li Muliang, Liang Yiming, Zhang Xuejin and Feng Zhixiao.
