Story Synopsis

Cao Zhi (AD 192-232) was younger brother of Cao Pi (AD 187-226), the ruler of the Kingdom of Wei during the Three Kingdoms period of China. He was a most-respected poet of his time in Chinese literature history. Ode to the Goddess of Luo River was his most highly regarded poem.

At a young age, Cao Zhi fell in love with Zhen Mi, a beautiful and charming daughter of a high-ranking official, but Zhen's father married his daughter to the son of the ruler of another kingdom. In the battle between the Caos and that official, the former succeeded and Zhen Mi had to marry Cao Pi. Sadness soon deprived Zhen of her life by jumping into the Luo River. Cao Zhi was very sad and composed the poem. In the poem, he compared Zhen with the Goddess of the Luo River and described how he encountered, fell in love with and was forced to leave the goddess because of the divergent ways of mortals and immortals.

Beijing Opera Goddess of Luo River is a classic play of the tragic romance.
