A young and gifted scholar Zhang Gong went to Pass Pu to visit his good friend Baima General Du Que. He met a beautiful lady Cui Yingying, nineteen-year-old daughter of former Prime Minister Cui, who were staying at the Pujiu Temple.  Zhang fell in love with Yingying at first sight. In the meantime, Sun Feihu led an army of bandits to besiege the temple and attempted to grab Yingying as a wife. At the critical moment, Madame Cui made a promise that her daughter would be married with whom it might defeat the bandits. Zhang Gong sent an urgent message to his friend General Du Que, and brought the troops to save the temple. However,  Madame Cui went back on her words soon after the crisis past. Zhang was down with lovesickness. Yingying felt very sorry. The two young people manage to meet secretly at the western chamber, with the help of Hongniang, Yingying's maid. Madame Cui heard their association and excruciated Hongniang. She can not but accept their relationship when Hongniang defends the couple by making a point of her promise in front of her. But she won't approve their marriage unless Zhang wins honor in the civil service examinations. The lovers sadly part  when Zhang leaves Yingying to attend the examinations in the capital.

书生张珙往蒲关访好友白马将军杜确，中途游普救寺，遇寄居寺内的已故崔相国之女崔莺莺，十分爱慕，便借宿寺内西厢。时有孙飞虎率兵围寺，强索莺莺为妻。崔夫人当众言明：有退得贼兵者，许配莺莺。张珙驰函杜确出兵解救了寺围。崔夫人嫌张贫寒而赖婚。张珙思念成疾，莺莺颇感歉疚，夜间亲赴西厢探望。后为崔夫人觉察。拷问红娘，红娘据实直说。夫人不得已将莺莺许张，但借口三世不招白衣女婿，要张立即赴京赶考。莺莺与张珙满怀离愁而别。
