In the latter part of the Qing Dynasty, the Ge family bought a little girl, "Little Cabbage," who would be Ge Xiao Du's wife. When Ge Xiao Du fell ill, Little Cabbage had to go to the Yang family to work as a housekeeper. Little Cabbage got to know Yang Nai Wu, the Yang family's eldest son. They eventually fell in love. However, a scoundrel called Liu Zi He, who is Yu Huang county magistrate's son, took a fancy to the girl. He plotted a conspiracy with a drug store owner to murder Ge Xiao Du, and framed Yang Nai Wu for the murder. This case involved many officials and to the extent the cover-up was so vast that it became one of the four mysterious crimes in the nation.
