This classic collection contains the rare records of famous Peking opera
plays performed by master Zhou Xinfang in 50s of the 19th century, 3 classic
arias selected.
Zhou Xinfang (1895-1975), born in Jingsu. In his childhood, he learned to
play opera under tuition of Chen Changxing and took the stage at the age of 7.
At 13 he moved to Beijing for training at the Xiliancheng, and co-performed with
Mei Lanfang, Lin Shusen and Hou Xirui. He returned to Shanghai when he was 17
and had since been a co-performer of Tan Xinpei, Sun Juxian, Wang Xiaonong and
Wang Hongshou.
In 1927, he joined the "Southern Land Theatre" led by Tian Han, and co-staged a
modern drama, Pan Jinlian, with Ouyang Yuqian. This was of great help in
improving his performing skills. Enlightened by the progressive dramatists, he
realized that drama was a "weapon for battle." He staged a number of Beijing
operas with anti-imperialism and anti-feudalism themes, such as Song Jiaoren,
Wang Mang usurps the Throne, Chen Sheng Wu Guang Uprising, the Eternal Regrets,
Two Emperors, Resisting the Jin Trouups, Dong Xiaowan, etc.
Zhou Xinfang was distinctive in the art of performing. His singing and
dialoguing were highly expressive and full of vigor. His acting and body
movement were vivid and graceful. Zhou's performing art was recognized as the Qi
style, as he had a stage name of Qi Lin Tong.
The Qi style has a lasting appeal to the audience. His repertoire included
Sweeping the Pine Needles, In Chase of Han Xin, Four Newly Appointed Officals,
Xu Ce Running Over the City, Scolding Wang Kui, Hai Rui Submits a Proposal, etc.
After the founding of new China, Zhou had been vice president of Chinese Academy
of Traditional Opera, president of East China Academy of Traditional Opera and
director of Beijing Opera Theatre of Shanghai. The Qi style is followed by Gao
Baisui, Chen Hefeng, Li Ruchun and Xiao Runzeng. Zhou's son, Shaolin, is an
inheritor of the Qi style and is widely acclaimed in south China.
