Xianglin's Wife, Widow Xianglin, Sister-in-Law Xianglin

Adapted from great contemporary writer Lu Xun's (1881-1936) novel "The New-Year Sacrifice" (Zhu Fu), Sister-in-Law Xianglin breaks through the boundaries of traditional Yueju Opera and leads it to tackle realistic social themes, starring Yuan Xuefen, a famous Yue opera actress whose style is named the Yuan School. The DVD carries the color film Sister-in-Law Xianglin shot in 1978.

The story set in Luzhen Town of Shaoxing, the hometown of Lu Xun. A child bride Sister-in-Law Xianglin was forced to remarry by her Mother-in-Law after her husband died. She refused and escaped to Family Lu to work as a servant. Later she was discovered and looted to remarry He Laoliu. Unfortunately, several years later, He Laoliu died of typhoid fever and their only son was killed by a wolf. With no alternative, she returned to Family Lu again. Because she lost a husband twice, she was taken for an ill-boding woman. The master tabooed and disliked her greatly, and she was forbidden to hold sacrifices. Sister-in-Law Xianglin heard that contributing doorsills could atone for someone's sin. Therefore she spent her two year earnings to buy a doorsill for atonement. Of course, it did not change her fate. Sister-in-Law Xianglin was driven out by her employer, became a beggar, and died on the snow-covered road of Luzhen Town, on Spring Festival's Eve at last.

童养媳祥林嫂在丈夫死后，婆婆逼其再嫁，她逃至鲁家帮工，后被发现，抢至山中与贺老六成亲。数年后贺疲病而亡，孩子又被狼叼走。祥林嫂只得重回鲁家。因两次守寡，为主人所厌，她将积蓄两年的工钱捐了门槛以期“赎罪”，却仍被鲁家逐出，在一个除夕之夜，倒毙在风雪之中。

根据鲁迅小说《祝福》故事改编的越剧《祥林嫂》，首演1946年。解放后，上海越剧院先后三次对该剧进行较大的修改加工，不断提高思想性和艺术性，使之成为享誉全国的经典剧目。袁雪芬在剧中成功地塑造了鲁迅笔下的祥林嫂形象，堪称袁派杰作，1978年被第二次搬上银幕，她和金采风将祥林嫂的一生通过戏曲的表现手法栩栩如生地展现在观众面前，为后人留下一部不可多得的艺术精品。
