Escape Out of the Pass is a traditional Peking Opera Play adapted from a historic fiction Romance of the Warring States depicts the story of Wu Yuan's revenge for his family. The Chu State Premier, Wu She, was killed because of his expostulation with the Chu State King's incest. All other members of his clan were persecuted to be killed in a villain. Only the son, Wu Yuan, was fleeing for a revenge. He is going to a neighboring state to ask for for reinforcement but is blocked at the pass. Having hidden away in a friend's house for several days, he is worrying how he could escape out of the pass. Ma Changli (1930-), a native of Beijing. He first learned to play opera from Li Hongchun, and later was enrolled in the Rongchunshe, with Wang Shaofang, Cai Ronggui and Zhang Sheglu as his tutors in lao sheng. He Learned the Yu style from Liu Shengtong. After training he offered himself as a disciple of Tan Fuying and Ma Lianliang, and also learned the Yang style performing art from Yang Baosen. His singing has a special charm in it. Ma Changli's repertoire has included Sweet Dew Temple, Four Newly Appointed Officials, the Three Family Inn, Wu Zixu, Su Wu as a Shepherd, Sha Jia Bang, etc. Ma is now a leading actor of the Beijing Opera Theatre of Beijing. |
