Du Shiniang, Lady Du

A high-class courtesan in the capital called Du Shiniang falls in love with a scholar Li Jia and married him after she redeems herself from the whorehouse with her savings. And then, she begins traveling home with Li Jia. When they stop by Guazhou, Li meets Sun Fu, a rich salt merchant who covets the good look of Shiniang. Sun advises Li not to bring home a prostitute. In response, the unfaithful scholar promises to sell Du to Sun. When Shiniang hears the deal, she abhorrs both Li Jia and Sun Fu, with sadness and anger, throws herself and several boxes of (previously hidden) priceless jewelry into the river.
