Dance drama featuring NW China's Mogao Grottoes to be staged in U.S.

Flower Rains along Silk Road

LANZHOU, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese classic dance drama "Flower Rains along Silk Road," based on the typical dance featuring the Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes in northwest Gansu province, will be staged in the U.S. from Dec 9 to 10 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C.

It will be the first time for the dance drama to be performed in the U.S., said Lu Jinlong, director with the Gansu Opera and Ballet Group. It originally debuted at Beijing's Great Hall of the People on Oct. 1, 1979, and over the past over 30 years, it has toured more than 20 countries and regions and performed 1,600 shows.

The dance drama recreates the prosperity and art along the Silk Road during the reign of the Tang Dynasty (618-907).

Dunhuang was a prosperous oasis town and a major stop along the historic Silk Road. The frescoes and clay sculptures in the grottoes near the town are some of the best preserved examples of the ancient Buddhist art.
