Mei Lanfang and the Mei School

MEI LANFANG (1894-1961), born in Beijing. He began to learn qingyi from Wu Lingixan at the age of 8 and took the stage at the age of 10. When he was 14 years old, he was enrolled in the Fu Liancheng opera school. He went to Shanghai at 19 years of age to perform with the accomplished lao sheng player Wang Fengqing, which won him fame. Ever since that time he had enjoyed high reputation for 50 years. He was an outstanding player on the stage with natural and poised appearance, mild and easy singing and beautiful uniform motions and gestures. And therefore, he and Shang Xiaoyun, Cheng Yangqiu, Xun Huisheng were named the Four Great Dan Actors. Mei Lanfang kept in pursuit of art painstakingly all his life. He sought for instruction from Qin Zhifen, Hu Ergeng, Wang Yaoqing and Ru Laiqing besides Wu Lingxian who introduced him to the field of opera and Chen Delin who became his tutor afterwards. He learned Kunqu opera from Qiao Huilan as well. Inheriting the performing art of his tutors and exploring scope for new creations brought him a good foundation of art that helped him a lot later on.
Mei Lanfang's artistic career underwent three periods. In the first period, he kept learning and inheriting the tradition of his predecessors by portraying the parts of qingyi, hua dan and daoma dan in some traditional operas such as Sacrificing at the Riverside, Two Loyal Courtiers, the Third Mistress Brings Up the Son, Meeting in the Mulberry Garden, Mu Ke Fort, Story of Su San, etc. The second period saw his improvement and creation in art. He performed in many ancient costume operas such as Chang E Flys to the Moon, Heaven Maiden Showering Flowers, the Goddess of River Luo, Xi Shi the Beauty, Legend of the Imperial Concubine, Daiyu Burying Flowers, the King's Parting with His Favorite, etc. In those singing and dancing operas, he created various dances with plumes, swords and silk fabric and he brought great reformation to the music for voices, the stage appearances and the stage costumes. He made a great contribution to enriching the epertoire of operas and the performing art of dan role players in the operas of fashionable costumes such as Lady Deng Xia, the Girl Killing the Snake, etc. In his third period, he concentrated his efforts on collating and polishing the traditional operas in order to improve them constantly. He worked at them with great care from the stories to the stage performances, thus raising the themes and the performing art to a higher level that could be reflected in Beauty Defies Tyranny, the Drunken Beauty, etc. He flew his own colors in his exquisite, resplendent, dignified and elegant performances that were deeply loved by the audience.
Mei Lanfang won a high reputation in the world and was the earliest cultural envoy of China. Leading delegations to Japan for visits and performances in 1919 and 1924, and to the United States and the Soviet Union in 1930 and 1935, he introduced the gorgeous Beijing opera to the outside world. He was president of China Beijing Opera Theatre and president of the Chinese Academy of Traditional Opera. His works included Collected Works of Mei Lanfang, a Collection of Mei Lanfang's Plays, Forty Years Stage Life of Mei Lanfang, and so on.
The Mei style followers include Li Shifang, Zhang Junqiu, Yan Huizhu, Du Jinfang, Liang Xiaoluan, Ding Zhiyun, Li Huifang, Chen Zhengwei, Mei Baojiu, Shen Xiaomei, etc.
