Courtesan Su San (Yu Tangchun, Yu Tang Chun) is set in the Ming Dynasty. The play tells the story of a prostitute who falls in love with a young scholar Wang Jinlong, also son of the minister of the Ministry of Official Personal Affairs, as he frequents her brothel and lodges there. When the scholar runs out of money the pimp throws him out. Afterwards the prostitute refuses to serve and is sold to a merchant from Shanxi Province by the procuress. The merchant's wife has cuckoldry with another man, poisons her husband, and brings a false charge against Su San at Hong Dong Prefecture. The bribed magistrate sentences Su San to capital punishment.
Su San is taken under guard to the county of Taiyuan for the reexamine, where she is to be tried by the Shanxi Commissioner, Wang Jinlong. Wang checks the records and sees that she is accused of killing her husband. So he invites his colleagues Pan Bizheng and Liu Bingyi to join him in the trial. At court, Su San gives her statement to declare that she is innocent. Wang gets so emotional that he excuses himself, saying that he would defer to the opinion of Pan and Liu. The truth is finally out - Su San is proved innocent and Wang, who was formerly her lover, can now be reunited with her.
