Notes: Schisandra chinensis (wu wei zi, literally "five flavor berry") is a deciduous woody vine native to forests of Northern China. Its berries are used in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is considered one of the 50 fundamental herbs. Medicinally it is used as a tonic and restorative adaptogen with notable clinically documented liver protecting effects. In particular, it can protect the liver and adrenals and prevent atrophy due to extreme stress. In fact this herb has calming energies and possesses some pain-alleviating properties yet it is also considered a central nervous system stimulant, that sharpens concentration, improves memory and increases alertness. In traditional Chinese medicine, Schisandra chinensis is believed to enter the Lung, Heart and Kidney meridians, so as to:

1. Astringe Lung Qi and nourish the Kidneys
2. Restrain the essence and stop Diarrhea--astringent Kidneys
3. Arrest excessive sweating from Yin or Yang deficiency

五味子

为木兰科植物五味子（英文名Sehisandra chinensis(Turcz.)BailL）习称“北五味子”，或华中五味子（英文名Schisandra sphenantheraRehd.et Wils.）习称“南五味子”的干燥成熟果实。古医书称它荎蕏、玄及、会及，最早列于神农本草经上品，中药功效在于滋补强壮之力，药用价值极高。

性味归经：温；酸、甘；归肺、心、肾经。

功能与主治：收敛固涩，益气生津，补肾宁心。用于久嗽虚喘，梦遗滑精，遗尿尿频，久泻不止，自汗，盗汗，津伤口渴，短气脉虚，内热消渴，心悸失眠。

五味子果实作中药功能益气生津、敛肺滋肾、止泻、涩精、安神，可治久咳虚喘、津少口干、遗精久泻、健忘失眠等症。药理试验证明能调节中枢神经系统的兴奋和抑制过程，促进肌体代谢，调节胃液和胆液分泌，对肝炎恢复期转氨酶升高者有降低作用。果皮及成熟种皮含木脂素，是五味子的药用有效成分，其中包括多种五味子素。
