The story was adapted from an eighteenth-century satire, The Scholars
In the Ming Dynasty, Fan Jin, a poor scholar, took the imperial examination lots of times, but failed all the times. This time, the date of examination was coming, Fan Jin wanted to take again. But his life was too hard to have money for travelling expenses. Fortunately his classmates and countrymen would sponsored him, he prepared a trip to the examination in a hurry.
In the examination, Fan Jin was jeered at the poverty by other candidates. After the examination, he heard the false information once again on the way home: he had failed. He was dejected and despaired of it. But, when he came home, he knew that he actually passed the examination at the 7th place of the second round. The news made him so excited that he was crazy. His father-in-law heavily slapped his faces, and got him right finally.

剧情介绍
明朝，穷秀才范进多次考试未中。这次，又到考期，范进又要去应试；但因生计艰难，缺少盘费，幸得同学及乡邻资助，勉强成行。在考试中，范进因家庭贫寒，受尽众举子的嘲弄讽刺。考试归途中，范进又多次听得落举的谎报，心情十分颓丧，几至绝望。当他回到家中，突然得知了中了第七名亚元，一时兴奋过度，竟成疯癫，经其岳父左右两掌，痛击其两颊，才醒过来。
