Wu Changshuo (1844-1927) was born in Anji, Zhejiang Province, and died in Shanghai. He was a Chinese seal carver, painter, and calligrapher. As a leading figure in the Shanghai School during the early 20th century, he was largely responsible for rejuvenating the genre of bird-and-flower painting by introducing an expressive, individualistic style more generally associated with literati painting. He began his artistic career with the traditional study of literature and ancient inscriptions before moving to calligraphy. After adulthood, he was famous for his seal-carving, though he learned Chinese painting at a later stage. His style of painting was swift, brisk and overpowering. His coloring was unconventional, bright and heavy. He liked to use Western red to color the fruits he drew. Famous works include "Flowers of Heavenly Bamboo", "Lotus in Ink" and "Apricot Flowers".

吴昌硕（1844－1927）初名俊，又名俊卿，字昌硕，又署仓石、苍石，号缶庐、苦铁等，浙江安吉人。他的篆刻是从“浙派”入手，后专攻汉印，也受邓石如、吴让之、赵之谦等人的影响。31岁以后，移居苏州，来往于江浙之间，阅历代大量金石碑版、玺印、字画，眼界大开。后定居上海，广收博取，诗、书、画、印并进；晚年风格突出，成为一代宗师。
吴昌硕是深刻影响中国近代画坛的艺术巨匠。他的艺术影响到他以后的二、三代人，众多现代绘画大师或出自他的门下，或受他的艺术影响，如近代海派诸家、北京画派的陈师曾、齐白石等，现代最具实力的几大家傅抱石、李可染、黄宾虹等无不源自于吴昌硕。吴昌硕是晚清著名画家，书法家、篆刻家，为“后海派”中的代表。 他继承前清碑派书法成果，以隶篆、北碑的古朴雄浑之笔演为画境，开创一代新风，在书法、篆刻和绘画上具有开宗立派的建树。70岁时，担任中外瞩目的重要艺术团体—西泠印社首任社长，被尊为一代宗师。
本片以严谨的态度，翔实地记录了吴昌硕艺术成就和发展道路，再现了吴昌硕的商周大篆、两汉隶书及用力最深的石鼓文，汲取篆书、篆刻的意趣，化为自身老辣、灵健、硬拙的行书风格；片中撷取了“莫铁”“湖州安吉县”、“破荷亭”等著名印章，辅以当代西泠金石名家详细点评，并运用大量书画作品中的印钤特写，表现吴昌硕篆刻艺术的写意、取神特色，以及早期秀丽、中期古朴苍老、晚年神雄气畅的风格演变。
