200 Yuanqu poems were selected from 68 authors of the Yuan Dynasty. The editor and translator also added annotates and composed a brief introduction to each author. In Chinese literature, qu, or yuanqu consists of sanqu and zaju. Along with shi and ci, the former comprises Chinese poetry. The latter is a form of Chinese opera. Qu became popular during the late Southern Song Dynasty, and reached its highest popularity in Yuan Dynasty, therefore it is often called yuanqu. Both sanqu and ci are lyrics written to fit a particular melody, but sanqu differs from ci in that it is more colloquial, and is allowed to contain chenzi ( "filler words" which are additional words to make a more complete meaning). Sanqu can be further divided into xiaoling and santao, with the latter comprising of more than one melody.
These 200 Yuanqu poems are from xiaoling of the Yuan Dynasty's sanqu authors.

本书以中华书局1964年出版的隋树森先生所编的《全元散曲》为蓝本，从200多位散曲作家的3853首小令中选译了68位作家的43种曲牌的200首作品。选译本题材广泛：有的借古讽今，有的怀古咏史，有的警世叹世，有的悲天悯人，有的歌颂爱情，有的赞叹自然，宦海如鼎镬、山野似乐园的主题表现得淋漓尽致。就其艺术风格而论，所选元曲更是百花齐放，绚丽多姿，各具特色，其艺术境界已达到顶峰。
为了再现原作的艺术风格，译者以“异化”为主“归化”为辅、“异化”与“归化”相结合为主导原则，以接受美学为理论依据，使译者与原作者风格在译文中和谐共现，从而使译者主体性与原作者主体性均得以体现。为了便于阅读，译者对原作中的难点和必要处附加了注释，还为每位散曲作者列出了中英文对照的简介。
