The literal translation of the title of this animation is Precious Lotus Lamp.
Precious Lotus Lamp (Bao Lian Deng) is China's first Disney-style animated film. This film for the first time uses Chinese stars, recording the music and the dialogue first, completing the final artwork second.
Jiang Wen, China's most famous film star, dubs the voice of the hero Chen Xiang. Pop singers Jeff Chang, Liu Huang and Li Wen sing the theme songs.
More than 60 graphic designers, animators and 20 background artists painted 4,000 early samples, 150 thousand action pictures and 2,000 background paintings. First planning began in 1995, under Chang Guangxi -one of China's leading animation designers- director Wu Yigong and composer Jin Guzai. They traveled to remote areas gleaning rich domestic resource for folk and cultural background: Dunhuang Caves, Xi'an, Hua Mountain, Xishuangbanna and Ningxia Autonomous Region.
This animation is unique in Chinese film industry also in that it is one of the first adapted from the ancient legend of Chinese ethnic minority Yi who resides in the beautiful southwestern part of China.
The heavenly Goddess Scan Sheng Mu, in spite of the opposition of her brother God Erlang, descended to earth with Lotus Lantern, married the scholar Liu Yanchang and subsequently gave birth to a baby son named Chenxiang. The family lived a happy life. However, God Erlang threatened the Goddess to return the Lotus Lantern by kidnapping Chenxiang. In order to save her son, the Goddess had no choice but give out the Lantern, and was consequently put under the weight of the Mount Huashan. When the little boy Chenxiang heard from the land god his mother's misery for saving his life, he made a decision to rescue his mother. After Chenxiang succeeded in retaking the Lantern and fleeing the heavenly palace with the help of Ga Mei, he started right away to look for his mother. At the critical moment of the decisive battle, Chenxiang defeated God Erlang and saved his own mother with the magic power of the Lotus Lantern.

传说中，天宫中的三圣母不顾哥哥二郎神的反对，带着宝莲灯下凡与书生刘彦昌结合并生下了沉香，一家人过着幸福的生活。二郎神为维护天规到人间抓走了小沉香，要挟三圣母交出宝莲灯。无奈之中，三圣母只得把灯交出，并被压在华山下。当沉香从土地神口中得知母亲为了自己，交出了宝莲灯，并被压在华山底下后，决意要救出母亲。在嘎妹的帮助下，沉香夺回了宝莲灯，逃离了天宫，踏上了寻母之路。孙悟空被沉香执著的精神所感动，在他的指点下，沉香带小猴和白龙马直奔火山，推倒了二郎神的石像，铸成了神斧。沉香举起神斧，与二郎神决一死战，在激战中二郎神屡施毒计，欲将沉香置于死地，在这千钧一发之际，宝莲灯突然发出了金光。沉香是否能战胜二郎神呢？
