The Chinese language has many set phrases, most of them are composed of four characters. The Chinese set phrases are all terse, concise, exquisite, beautiful and pleasing to the ear and the eyes. They contain profound philosophy and fine, interesting, entertaining stories calling for deep thought. In giving speech, one can make his speech concise and vivid and also enrich the vocabulary of his spoken language by using proper set phrases.
In this book the author selected brief, forceful, vivid and interesting stories of the Chinese set phrases and translated them into modern Chinese and English according to the original ancient Chinese writings. The explanatory notes on the titles in Chinese and English were added. Before and after each story and its explanatory note are the original text of the ancient Chinese writing and the illustration based on the meaning of the phrase.
This book is a reading material for the study of language, a story-book for recreation and delight, and also a reference book for the workers of English to research into the skill of translation from Chinese into English.
