Peking Opera Xie Yaohuan, Heroine Xie Yaohuan
During the reign of Empress Wu Zetian of the Tang Dynasty, a lot of farmers in the southern region of the Yangtze River decamped and joined the outlaws at Tai Lake because despotic gentries had annexed to glebe. A woman official Xie Yaohuan asked for appeasing these farmers. Empress Wu Zetian appreciated her very much, appointed her to the imperial censor and sent her on an inspection tour of south China.
When Xie arrived in Suzhou, she saw that Wu Hong, a son of Wu Sansi who was a powerful courtier and nephew of Wu Zetian, and Cai Shaobing, a brother of Lai Junchen (AD 651-697) who was a secret police official during the Chinese dynasty Tang Dynasty and Wu Zetian's Zhou Dynasty, were bullying residents and tussling with righteous Yuan Xingjian in a public occasion. She took them to yamun and adjudged Wu Hong and Cai Shaobing guilty. Wu and Cai defied the adjudgement. As Wu and Cai were contempt of court, Xie ordered to behead Cai and bludgeoned Wu. At the same time, she realized Yuan Xingjian as a chivalrous man from this affair, and married him.
However, for avenging accomplices, Wu Sansi and Lai Junchen falsely accused Xie of having connections with bandits. Empress Wu Zetian decided to investigate into the case, and she arranged a clandestine tour to south China. In the meantime, Xie was thrown into the prison awaiting for execution. After investigation by herself, the empress blew a fuse, ordered to execute Lai Junchen and dismissed Wu Sansi from his post, and ennobled Xie Yaohuan Marquis Dingguo. But Xie would not go to her post, rather like to be buried alive with her husband Yuan Xingjian in Tai Lake.
Xie Yaohuan was created by Tian Han, a modern famous playwright of China, in 1961. It is a tragic Beijing opera named after the heroine, an official in the reign of Empress Wu Zetian.

剧情介绍
唐武则天称帝时,江南农民因豪绅兼并土地,逃亡太湖聚义,女官谢瑶环奏请安抚,武则天深为赏识,亲命谢为右台御史,赐尚方宝剑,巡按江南。
谢至苏州,一日乔装私访,遇见武三思之子武宏和来俊臣弟蔡少柄,因强抢民女与义士袁行健打斗,谢劝双方到衙门申诉。大堂之上,谢秉公处断,武、蔡不服,大闹公堂,谢动用尚方宝剑,斩蔡少柄,杖责武宏。谢见袁行健豪侠尚义,二人结成姻缘。
武三思等为子弟报仇,诬谢谋反,并矫命审谢。待武则天查实,密幸江南时,谢已被打入死囚牢。则天盛怒,诛来俊臣、武宏,撤武三思职,封谢瑶环为定国侯。瑶环不愿入朝为官,与袁行健归隐太湖。
