The Chinese Lunisolar Calendar 2026: Year of the Fire Horse

The traditional calendar uses the sexagenary cycle (ganzhi system), a mathematically repeating cycle of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. Astronomical calculations emphasize efforts to mathematically correlate solar and lunar cycles from an Earth-centric perspective — a task that inherently requires some numerical approximation. Today, the Gregorian calendar is used for daily civil life, but traditional lunisolar holidays continue to be observed across China and throughout the Chinese diaspora.
